What does ‘Mamalla’ in Mamallapuram or Mahabalipuram refer to?
Mahabalipuram is also known as Mamallapuram. It is an ancient historical town and was a bustling seaport. Mamallapuram derives its name from the Pallava King Narsimhavarman I, who was an expert wrestler and was called Mamallan (the great wrestler).
